1. Agios Ioannis Chapel – the church from the movie Mamma Mia

Agios Ioannis sto Kastri is a chapel dedicated to Saint John, located on top of a rocky outcropping in the midst of the sea. The little, unassuming church pictured became an internationally recognized spot after it was used as the backdrop for Sophie’s wedding in the 2007 film “Mamma Mia!”.

The views from down below are breathtaking; and you can see for miles in every direction once you make it up top. It’s an unbelievable landscape that’s definitely worth checking out if you’re ever near the northern side of the island.

And after making your way there, be sure to cool off with a dip in the crystal-clear waters below—it’ll feel great after hiking all the 200 steps up the rock.

The walk to the church is difficult, as it takes you down a steep hill and then up 200 steps cut into the rock outcropping on the side. The steps are well built but they are quite steep; however, there are handrails to assist with the climb.

Make sure you wear comfortable shoes! If traveling by public transportation you will have to hike about 2 kilometers from the main road, as there is no public transportation available at site. A car rental will get you much closer and more comfortably to this location.

2. Panagia Evangelistria Monastery

The Panagia Evangelistria Monastery is a beautiful monastery located on the west coast of the island. It’s worth visiting for its stunning architecture and views over the sea.
